Question: What's the problem in attending an annual death day commemoration MPD on 21st October? 

Answer: First and foremost, any type of annual death ceremony is contrary to the teachings of Ananda Marga. This type of annual death ceremony ritual is common in the dogmatic religions, but forbidden in the dharma of Ananda Marga. It is against Caryacarya which states that all observances for the deceased must be completed within 12 days. The dogmatic religions observe annual death day programs, but true margiis do not. Such ceremonies are dogmatic and against Guru.

Of highest importance is that Sadguru Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji is Mahasambhuti and He remains eternally as the Taraka Brahma. So there is no question of there being any type of death day commemoration on 21st October. 

Ananda Marga Caryacarya guides us, "The one formless, beginningless and infinite Parama Brahma (Supreme Consciousness) is the only entity to be attained by living beings-That alone is Jagat Guru (the Supreme preceptor), That alone has revealed Brahmavidya (intuitional science) to us through the medium of the name and form of Anandamurtijii. Unit beings must be made to appreciate Its majesty." (2)

Those who think that there is nothing wrong with observing so-called mahaprayan are unaware of Guru's teachings. They are severely harming themselves by transgressing His guidelines and going against His desire.

So-called mahaprayan is anti-Dharma Guru Baba

Every Ananda Margii knows that Baba never raised the matter of "mahaprayan", and never gave His approval for any type of mahaprayan function. As bhaktas, true margiis should never do what Baba does not want. What He wants - i.e. what He has given in Caryacarya - is what true Ananda Margiis should do. As His disciples, we should surrender unto Him and do as per His desire, i.e. follow His divine teachings. True Ananda Margiis never put their own brain first and make their own rules that are contrary to the teachings of Parama Purusa Baba. Those who do like this are traitors to Guru. Baba strictly told us not to do like this - that is a sin of commission.

Best is to be strict in Sixteen Points. From birth to death, from one's first rising in the day to taking rest in the night, Baba has given explicit instructions for each and every aspect of life. He has given thousands of discourses and spoken on countless topics of philosophy and knowledge, and nowhere did He say one word about mahaprayan.

Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji is Taraka Brahma. No human being should think that they are greater than that. What He told us to do we should do; and that which He told us not to do should never be done - such as an annual shraddha ceremony like so-called mahaprayan. When mahaprayan is against Baba's command, then why would anyone wish to destroy their existence by attending the annual death ceremony. That is against Baba's wishes. That is spiritual suicide.

He remains eternally as Taraka Brahma

When the omnipresent Supreme Entity Parama Purusa wishes to communicate directly with His bhaktas He is called Taraka Brahma. Taraka Brahma Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji is ever-present in His divine form as Taraka Brahma - eternally always with us. That is how He guides us as Guru and we meditate on Him. By this way, by His grace, every sadhaka gets His blessing in various spiritual practices.

Eating sinful food

Moreover, eating food at any type of death ceremony is forbidden. Yet the MPD organizers offer a 7-day programme that is full of tasty meals and feasting; this is a complete violation of Caryacarya. Verily, those attending annual so-called death day MPD dogma are eating sinful food.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, “Shráddhánna: Shráddhánna (food offered at a memorial service)...is not to be taken.” (7) 

So-called mahaprayan is against Guru's wishes

Identifying dharmikas

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "The greatest quality of a person at a meeting or debate is the capacity to convince others. The highest quality in the battlefield is 'yudhi vikramam', or valor in battle. While in danger, one's great quality is patience." (1)

When in danger, some become paranoid and some remain patient and calm. Depending upon one’s reaction, a person displays their weakness or their greatness. When danger arrives if one becomes paranoid or if a person loses their wits, they will not be able to solve the problem. Rather, they become a liability. In that case, they are not a dharmika because they are missing the first point of dharma - i.e. dhrti  (patience). In contrast, if one's rational brain is keen and sharp when in grave danger, and that person is able to properly evaluate the situation and take the right course of action, it means that individual is a dharmika.

Here the point is not that if someone else's house burns down and you keep calm, then you are a dharmika. That is not the idea. Rather, the objective is to keep your rational mind functioning when your own house is burning down. If you can manage to keep your own mind balanced in a dangerous situation, you can resolve that issue in the best way according to circumstances. That is the quality of a true dharmika.

Normally it is difficult to gauge who is a dharmika and who is not. Everybody will try and claim that they are a great dharmika. If any problem comes, that is the time to measure if one is a dharmika or not. If one becomes paranoid at the time of misery then that person is not a dharmika. And if they are calmly trying to resolve the issue then that person is a dharmika.

Here is the announcement of the mahaprayan of President Hugo Chavez, a communist leader and kind of dictator of Venezuela. This mahaprayan news was printed in big, bold headings in the Bengal newspapers. Indeed, Chavez was a self-described Marxist. So through and through, in his personal and political life he was a tried and true communist.

So even those communists who do not follow any religion or believe in God or spirituality, even they get a mahaprayan in Bengal. This was announced in big, bold headlines in Bengal. Thus in the English speaking world, they wrote about the death of Chavez, and here in Bengal they wrote about the mahaprayan of Chavez. That is because mahaprayan is a death ceremony in Bengal. The two are synonymous - it is a regular phenomenon, not some great event.

Wailing at Hugo Chavez mahaprayan

See here below how the concept of mahaprayan is used in our Bengali publication to mark Chavez's death. The Bangla term “mahaprayan” is the 4th Bangla word of the first line below the photo - it is outlined in red font. Using the term "mahaprayan" to signify the death of a human being is a common phenomenon in my Bengal. The concept of mahaprayan means the person is dead. That is why the person below holding the placard or banner with Chavez's photo is crying terribly - i.e. wailing. Because Chavez has died - i.e. mahaprayan.

The Bangla term mahaprayan is the 4th Bangla word of the first line in the above photo - it is outlined in red.

In the above newspaper article - as well as in its regular usage - the program of mahaprayan is used for the death of a human being who has made his departure from this world. So the entire concept of mahaprayan is not some lofty or extraordinary devotional ideal, rather it is something mundane and common that even gets used for communist dictators like Chavez. The concept of mahaprayan means that person is dead.

That is why the mahaprayan program is not to be done for Sadguru because He did not depart - He is ever present.

How MPD harms bhaktas

Baba is not an ordinary human being - He is not mortal. He is the all-pervading Parama Purusa and Sadguru. If one is not keeping this ideal in their heart, then they are not even on the first step of Ananda Marga spirituality. The initial phase of Ananda Marga spirituality starts with the feeling that Sadguru is always present with me.

In Ananda Marga an annual shraddha ceremony / shraddhainjali  (annual death day commemoration) is not allowed. Unfortunately, even then some confused people are doing an annual death day ceremony for their Sadguru. The moment one thinks that Sadguru is no more with me, then their spiritual life will collapse. In the field of bhakti, one should never think that Baba is no more. Yet this is the overall message of the mahaprayan function.

The annual mahaprayan gathering violates the code of Caryacarya. No aspect of Ananda Marga ideology supports the program of an annual death ceremony  observance.

Some Wts displaying hypocritical behaviour

When our avadhutas / acaryas / wts give initiation, or revise anyone’s lessons, or give further lessons of sadhana, our wts say, “I am just a medium - Sadguru Taraka Brahma Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji is teaching you and He is ever-present."

So in one breath our Wt dadas / didis say that Sadguru Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji is guiding you and in the next breath they say He is dead - mahaprayan. That is both hypocritical and sinful. Hypocritical because they are telling one thing and doing something else. They are telling that Guru is no more in their mahaprayan program, yet when teaching sadhana they are relying on Him. And it is sinful because it is abusive against Guru.

It is similar to your own children playing before you and talking among themselves that, “My mother is dead.” As a mother, how will you feel? And not only that, they go one step ahead, before your eyes they started commemorating your annual death day ceremony.

How do you feel about their ignorance? True bhaktas never participate in the dogmatic annual death day ceremony / mahaprayan of the ever-present God. That is against pre-1990 Caryacarya.” How long will we allow Guru to be insulted and put down in this way.

True bhaktas know that there is no such thing as mahaprayan for Sadguru Baba. As the Sadguru, He never passes away; He is omnipresent.

Family planning operation is bad for health

Prout philosophy states, "Vested interests do not favour population growth because this will mean sharing mundane property at the cost of their hoarding. Capitalism would like the extinction of the intellectual class as this would give it free scope for exploitation. The intellectual class usually belongs to the middle income group. Capitalists encourage family planning and birth control to check the growth of this middle class, thus these measures are a creation of the capitalist order."

"Due to age-old superstitions the common people does not take help of these measures. It is the middle class intellectuals who adopt these practices and become the victims of them. A Proutistic order would vehemently oppose this move. There is immense potential for maintaining the population of the world. By scientific advancement it may be possible for human beings to live on tablets. The real glory of humanity lies in creating conditions for adjustment with natural processes rather than in curbing normal processes by artificial measures."

"Artificial sterilisation means making males or females artificially sterile. This has certain adverse effects on the mind and body of human beings. Sterilisation brings glandular changes and changes in the hormone secretion of the glands which ultimately affects mental expression. Due to these changes a man may become like a eunuch. According to PROUT only severely handicapped people and born criminals should be sterilised." (1)

Animals and medicine

   Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Moonlight is not a medicine like sunlight is. Rather moonlight often overwhelms the mind with a different kind of emotion. However, the qualities of medicinal herbs and plants are affected according to the difference in moonlight, that is, in accordance with the lunar day and lunar fortnight. So there are rules for removing medicinal plants from the soil, preparation of medicines and their uses in accordance with the lunar day. The medicinal qualities undergo changes during the different periods of the day, so one should use medicines with that factor in mind; at least it is better if it is done so. Those medicinal herbs and plants or those medicines whose qualities are affected according to the difference in lunar day or planetary position are called kulyá. So you see, this also is a meaning of the word kulyá."
   "Not only have human beings used plant substances for medicines since ancient times, they have also prepared medicines extensively from animals. In the Ayurvedic, Vaidyaka and Unani systems of medicine, animal substances, such as the livers of different animals and partridge fat, were used extensively. Who is not familiar with the medicine prepared from the body of a goat and oil from the hornbill? Medicines used to be prepared from the livers, pancreases, etc., of different animals in the allopathic system of treatment. In recent times they have been used for insulin. Cod liver oil and shark oil are frequently used. They are used not only as oral medicines but also in injections. Medicines such as naja, cina, and apis in homeopathy are completely of animal origin. Killing an animal in order to save the life of a human being may not be a very good practice, but it can be done when there is no alternative. This is a universally accepted principle. But when medicines are prepared by killing animals, it should be done as far as possible from those animals which are the born enemies of human beings. Those who are not the born enemies of human beings but are their natural friends should not be killed." (1)

Note: This letter is only for those who have reverence for Sadguru Baba Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji and try to follow His Ananda Marga ideology.

Namaskar,

I was with Baba in Delhi those days. Once He blessed me with the special opportunity to go in His room and personally see and serve Him. Then Baba started recounting many aspects of Lord Krsna’s advent - including the long story of how Lord Krsna withdrew His form as Mahasambhuti. By listening to this involved account, I was feeling pained and concerned.

Then Baba asked me, "Why are you feeling disturbed and upset? You know, one day I also have to withdraw my Mahasambhuti form. You people must not become unhappy."

Hearing this, I became very emotional. As Baba was speaking, I became so overwhelmed and disturbed. I was crying profusely.

Then Baba started smiling and gently reassured me. In a very sweet and loving manner, He calmly said, "Don't worry my boy. First, stop crying and I will tell you something."

When I stopped crying Baba began speaking, "All the rules of nature have been given by Parama Purusa. I too will have to withdraw my form as Mahasambuti, yet I shall eternally remain as Taraka Brahma. The day will come when I have finished the work I have decided to do. When Lord Krsna wanted to make the Great India, the Mahabharata, He used the Pandavas as His medium. And when His work was finished, with His own desire, He withdrew His body of painca bhutas. You all are my mini-Babas. When you become capable of executing My samkalpa, then I will automatically understand that you can fulfill My work. In that case, what will be the use of My body of five tattvas? When the work is finished then I will withdraw My Mahasambhuti form, yet I will remain always with you as Taraka Brahma and help you."

Before leaving the room, I asked some questions.

No annual death ceremony for Mahasambhuti

I (Parasattananda) asked Baba, "Why is it that people do not observe the annual death ceremony of Lord Krsna, yet people observe the birth ceremony of Lord Krsna?”

When I asked Baba this question He replied in a loud voice and lovingly scolded me, "Does Parama Purusa ever die? He is that eternal Entity who never dies."

When I saw the expression on His face I started trembling and sweating. I felt very repentant for asking such a stupid question.

Baba said, "Parama Purusa is one and He comes from time to time as Mahasambhuti. The first time on this earth He came as Lord Shiva and the second time He came as Lord Krsna. They came for doing some great work and when Their plan was fulfilled They withdrew their form of Mahasambhuti and remained eternally present in Their original seity of nitya bhava. To establish dharma, They came and when dharma was established, They withdrew their quinquelemental body. I too have come on this earth to establish dharma and when I am satisfied then I will withdraw and remain eternally as Taraka Brahma. Remember, I will remain always with you and help you.”

"As I just told you, Lord Krsna did this exact same thing. With His desire, He withdrew His Mahasambhuti form when His work was finished. Because He is Parama Purusa and eternally present all the time as Taraka Brahma, He is Omnipresent. So there is no question of observing the day Lord Shiva and Lord Krsna withdrew Their forms as Mahasambhuti. And always, the Divine Entity remains in His eternal stance."

Conclusion

In the last, with a strong voice Baba asked me, "When I (Baba) withdraw my form as Mahasambhuti will you people try to observe that day?"

Listening to Baba’s commanding voice I was scared and replied slowly, "No, Baba." After that Baba was very gentle, and He told me, "It is getting late - go and take rest."

I did sastaunga pranam and quickly left His room. Immediately I started pondering Baba’s unhappiness in His response to my question. The idea was coming in my mind again and again how Baba expressed His displeasure. Because of that, still I remember the whole episode and know that His so-called mahaprayan must not be observed. That is why in my personal life I have never participated in that programme. How can I participate and disobey His command and make Him unhappy. Since long I have been telling this story to all who I see on different occasions. That is why since the beginning I have strongly opposed this so-called mahaprayan gathering.

About above story

This story is translated from Dada Parasattananda ji's book 'Manavrata ka Sunahala Bhavishya', which means "The Golden Future of Humanity". Dada Parasattananda is posted in India most of the time. These days postings and transfers are so common in our AMPS but as far as my awareness in the recent past Dadaji was posted in Bihar. He has been a WT since 1967.

When Parama Purusa comes

Baba said, "I only took this quinquelemental form to practically teach and establish dharma. If Parama Purusa so desires He can do anything and everything. But when He has created this physical world, He also made the rules to control this physical world. So He has to follow His own rules.

He is also obeying those rules when He comes. If Lord Krsna had so desired, dharma would have been established even without the complete destruction of the Kaoravas; but, it would not have been an effective or inspiring display. Actually, Lord Krsna wanted to teach people that they should come forward to save dharma. That is the lesson He put forth."

After Baba concluded His talk, I was weeping and I pleaded, "Baba, please do not say such painful things.. If You so desire, You may withdraw Your form as Mahasambhuti, but promise me that You must not leave me."

Listening to my plea, Baba assured me, "Just know this. I was with you, I am with you, and I will ever remain with you. You people are to be the medium of My ideology; the world will know Me by your actions."

Here I am quoting some Baba's direct lines which are highly significant.

Baba says, "Shive ruśt́e gurustrátá guraoruśt́e nákashcana.”

The meaning of the whole sloka is that when Guru is unhappy then nobody in this universe can save the person. That is why it is also said, Mantramúlaḿ Gururvákyam” 'Guru's words are mantra..."

One Parama Purusa & various names

In the above story, Lord Shiva and Lord Krsna were mentioned. Yet, Parama Purusa is one. On this earth - Parama Purusa has taken advent three times: 1) Lord Shiva, 2) Lord Krsna, and 3) Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji. So one singular Parama Purusa came on this earth on three separate occasions - each time using a different name and form. Yet, an aspirant should have only one Ista.

Warning: The below is very sensitive information only for senior margiis and Wts, i.e. those who know all the ins and outs of AMPS.

Mastermind of mahaprayan dogma

Sarvatmananda was the mastermind of the mahaprayan dogma, yet look what he faced. All know well that before starting mahaprayan he was a kind of nucleus in Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha. Dada Sarvatmananda held tremendous respect by all in the organisation. Yet because he disobeyed Sadguru Baba and implemented the mahaprayan dogma, look what happened to him. With his vanity he destroyed himself; he pulverised himself to dust. Due to the murder charge, he could not leave India. Moreover, Dadaji’s own supporters stripped him of all his power. Those followers of Sarvatmananda, i.e. demons like Rudrananda and Rabiishananda, attacked him and knocked him down. It was just a pitiful situation leading up to his death. Seeing Dada Sarvatmananda’s pathetic condition those days even stone-hearted people had tears in their eyes.

Lesson learned

a) Nobody should observe mahaprayan and face the wrath of prakrti.
b) Do more sadhana to feel that Sadguru is ever-present.

All should take this lesson and not observe so-called mahaprayan.

Early days of medicine

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Where medicines were not effective as external ointments, it became necessary to rub them on the skin or on the nerves where they could be absorbed through the pores. People discovered these rubbing medicines somewhat later. These massage or rubbing ointments were the discovery of a later stage."

"Where there was any poisonous effect of the rubbing ointment, there was no recourse but to use it externally. However, people learned to use them without any poisonous effect in the form of liquid medicines by dissolving them in water or other liquid solvents."

"There are certain ointments which, if ingested in small doses, have no poisonous effect, but which may have a poisonous effect if taken in large doses. Human beings learned to use them by licking them so that they could act effectively through the nerve fibres. They used to swallow those medicines after licking them with the tongue for a long time. Because the quantity is very small there is no harmful effect; rather one gets the full benefit. Such medicines are called avaleha [licking] in Ayurveda."

"People even discovered some medicines that develop certain special beneficial qualities when mixed with other specific substances. In other words, the same medicine when mixed with substance “a” became a medicine for headaches, when mixed with substance “b” became a medicine for diarrhea, and when mixed with substance “c” became a medicine for respiratory ailments. In this case, people gave the name anupána [ingredient] to the substances “a,” “b” and “c”. That is, by discovering that the medicinal qualities varied according to the different anupánas, people began to use them as medicines." (1)

Re: Sin of Dada Santoshananda

Namaskar,

This is a very good point you raised. Fasting should not be done for more than one day. Here in India we see that for social issues, Proutists follow and propagate the Gandhian way of protest fasting. And  they encourage others also. And if anyone raised the point then then tell that Baba fasted in jail. They themselves are not in jail but they give the example of Baba in jail. Their comparison is like apples and oranges. Recently, Dada Santoshananda completed a 3-day dry fast to protest local injustices. By going against Baba, Dada Santoshananda has committed sin.
One should not fast for more than one day at a time

Ananda Marga ideology says, “Nor should you undergo fasting for a long period of time. I have prescribed that our monks should undergo fasting four days per month, two Ekádashiis, one Amávasyá, and one Púrńima’.” (1)
According to Ananda Marga, one should not fast for more than one day at a time.
Please see the sign / banner behind the crowd that where it is written that to press his local political demands, Dada Santoshananda is performing fast without water from 12 to 14 Sept. So you see that the poster which Dada Santoshananda made is against Ananda Marga principles. In the above quote Baba says something completely different: One should not fast for more than one day at a time. By not following the order of Baba Dada  Santoshananda has committed sin.
