“For the Attention of the Concerned Authority”
Subject: Prayer for appropriate action regarding the abandonment of a wife and the attempt to return to monastic life after approximately twelve years of married life, while concealing the fact of being a monk.
Respected Authority,
Namaskar.
I, Anjana Adhikari (Chowdhury), a member of an ordinary Bengali family residing in the United States and a follower of Ananda Marga, respectfully wish to bring to your kind attention, with profound sorrow, concern, and deep emotional distress, an extremely important and painful chapter of my life.
Kedarnath Chowdhury, who later became known as Amar Nath Chatterjee, came into contact with me in the United States in connection with his work. Gradually, our communication and interaction increased, and at one point he proposed marriage to me. After giving the matter considerable thought and relying upon the identity and information provided by him, we entered into marriage in accordance with Hindu customs and prevailing social practices. Subsequently, our marriage was also legally registered.
Before our marriage, I was completely unaware that he was a monk of Ananda Marga. Approximately six months after our marriage, I came to learn that he was Acarya Krishna Pranananda Avadhuta, associated with the Kolkata Administration of the Ananda Marga Pracharaka Samgha.
One of the most serious aspects of my complaint is that he did not disclose to me, prior to our marriage, either his identity as a monk or his organizational association with Ananda Marga. Had I known the truth about his monastic status and background before the marriage, my decision regarding the marriage would have been entirely different. Therefore, entering into marriage while withholding such significant information has been an extremely serious and painful matter for me.
After our marriage, he encouraged me to learn and practise Ananda Marga spiritual practices. Following his guidance, I accepted the practice and began practising regularly. However, after learning about his monastic identity, I became deeply distressed and emotionally shattered. I directly asked him, If you were a monk, why did you marry me?
In response, he told me that he had had no contact with the organization for approximately eight years. After learning this, I wanted to withdraw from the relationship. However, he did not allow me to do so and was unwilling to let me leave. Subsequently, our married life continued for some time in a relatively normal manner.
At one point, I became pregnant. Tragically, under circumstances involving pressure and coercion from him, I was compelled to undergo an abortion and lost my unborn child before the child could see the light of day. This incident caused a profound and lasting emotional wound in my life.
We remained married for approximately twelve years. He subsequently obtained U.S. citizenship in connection with our marriage. After obtaining citizenship, I gradually began to notice serious changes in his behaviour toward me. Eventually, I became subjected to serious emotional and physical abuse and was also confronted with various forms of dishonesty, unethical conduct, and irresponsible behaviour on his part. I also came to learn about his inappropriate relationships with other women. When I objected to such conduct, our marital relationship deteriorated further, resulting in serious conflict, distress, and emotional separation.
Eventually, the situation reached a point where he left me completely on my own, while leaving me burdened with a substantial amount of debt. I repeatedly attempted to contact him, but instead of communicating with me, he continued spending time with other women, which caused me profound emotional pain.
Despite everything, I continued to make sincere efforts to preserve our relationship and establish communication with him. At one point, he informed me that he had supposedly divorced me. However, I had received no prior notice, court notice, or proper documentation relating to any such divorce. This caused me even greater distress, uncertainty, and emotional trauma.
Ultimately, in a deeply distressed and helpless state, I was compelled to bring the matter to the attention of the highest authority of the Kolkata Administration. After my complaints were examined and reviewed, organizational action was taken against him, and he was expelled from the organization.
At that time, I believed that my complaints and the events that had occurred in my life had been given due consideration and had been evaluated fairly. However, I have recently learned through various sources that he has again applied to the Kolkata Administration of the Ananda Marga Pracharaka Samgha for permission to resume functioning as a monk of Ananda Marga.
This news has caused me immense distress and emotional upheaval. Memories of the painful events of the past have resurfaced, and I am once again going through severe emotional suffering.
My humble submission is that if a person conceals his identity as a monk from an ordinary woman, marries her without disclosing such a significant fact, subsequently fails to fulfil his moral and social responsibilities toward her within the marriage, and causes profound emotional and social harm to her life, then his past conduct, accountability, and the injustice suffered by the concerned woman should be given the utmost consideration before he is permitted to return to monastic life.
The life of a monk is not merely a matter of personal choice. The conduct of a monk has implications for the dignity, moral standing, and reputation of the individuals concerned, as well as society and the organization as a whole. Therefore, I respectfully submit that allowing him to return to monastic life without a proper, impartial, and compassionate assessment of what happened to me would, in my sincere view, constitute a grave injustice toward me.
The events I have described have had a profound and lasting impact on my mental and emotional well-being. At present, I am deeply distressed and seriously concerned about my mental well-being and personal safety. The memories of the past and the present circumstances continue to affect me severely. I therefore earnestly request that my representation not be treated merely as a personal complaint, but as an appeal for justice from a woman who has suffered profound emotional and personal harm.
My humble appeal is that the truth be assessed fairly and that the injustice I have suffered as a woman be duly acknowledged and addressed. I believe that, guided by the ideals of Shrii Shrii Anandamurti Ji—justice, morality, humanity, and truth, you will consider this matter in that spirit.
I sincerely hope that this deeply painful chapter of my life will not be ignored and that the matter will be considered with compassion, fairness, and a commitment to justice. The present circumstances are having a serious impact on my mental well-being and personal safety. I therefore earnestly request your immediate and appropriate intervention so that my dignity, safety, and legitimate concerns are not overlooked.
I remain hopeful of your kind consideration, an impartial inquiry, and a fair and just decision.
Yours faithfully,
Anjana Adhikari (Chowdhury) A follower of Ananda Marga United States
