How Commentary book missed the point + 2 more

Baba
How Commentary book missed the point

Namaskar,

As Ananda Margiis, we are so blessed to have come under the shelter of Baba - the Sadguru. One of our main duties as disciples is to spread His divine teachings and maintain their authenticity and integrity. To that end, we are to do pracara and explain His scriptures.

Sadguru Baba has given a wide variety of books of Ananda Marga philosophy. Some are easier to understand than others. For instance, comparatively speaking, the Ananda Vacanamrtam series is simple and easy, whereas Idea & Ideology, Yoga Psychology, and Ananda Sutram are quite difficult. Without a clear understanding of such texts, one should not try to interpret them as they will only confuse and mislead others.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Appearance of Sadguru in a margii’s life

As an example, let’s take a look at one of Baba's original teachings from Ananda Sutram. In His spiritual treatise, Baba reveals the special secret behind the appearance of Sadguru in the life of a sadhaka in sutra 3-8.

3-8 Muktya'ka'unks'aya' sadgurupra'ptih.

"Purport: When a vehement desire for emancipation wakes up in a person, he attains his sadguru [true spiritual preceptor] on the strength of that desire." (1)

In the world, there are various grades of spiritual seekers. The lowest grade, C-grade, are fake seekers. From the outside, it looks like they want spirituality, but in reality they don’t. Just they are praying to the Lord for money, wealth, and the blessings for more mundane gains like prestige, property, daughter’s marriage etc. So these C-grade seekers also get a guru, but that guru is fake.

The next stage is B-grade seekers. They want help from God to serve, feed, clothe, and shelter the suffering masses and help them in their bad days. But these B-grade seekers do not think they have the requisite strength to accomplish this - so they ask God for help. So on their spiritual journey they get guidance from a guru that guides them about ritualistic practices in order to gain something. Because these seekers are B-grade, so their guru is also B-grade.

Top grade seekers, A-grade seekers, want to realise Parama Purusa. Here the crux of the matter is that even A-grade seekers are not so elevated that by their own qualification they will recognise and find the proper Guru by their own talent. They long for Him but do not know how to reach Him. In their mind, there is a strong yearning for salvation and realising the ultimate truth. Because their longing is purely spiritual in nature that is why Sadguru comes before these A-grade seekers.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

In the above sutra from Ananda Sutram, it is said that when an A-grade seeker has strong spiritual longing then Guru appears before them. But it is not that the Guru appears out of thin air and descends down from the heavens etc. Rather, when an A-grade seeker has a strong desire then the Sadguru will infuse that sadhaka’s mind with inspiration. And, the Sadguru will inspire the mind of an acarya and create the requisite circumstances whereby the sadhaka will naturally meet that acarya of Ananda Marga and get tantrika diiksa. That is how the Sadguru comes.

All in all, the approach may vary from one sadhaka to the next on the basis of time, space, and person, but the story of how any Ananda Margii came onto the path of AM is the story of this above sutra.

Sadguru vs. fake gurus

So in sutra 3-8, Baba is not talking about a pseudo-guru, a dogmatic guru, or a fake guru etc; He is talking about the Sadguru. This sutra is for the Sadguru, and everyone is aware that only Taraka Brahma is the Sadguru.

For instance, if Mr A got Ramakrsna, or Sai Baba, or Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, or Swami Ramananda or Totapuri, or xyz as his guru, then the above sutra is not applicable. Because none of the aforementioned people are Sadguru. Rather they are ordinary or quasi gurus. Millions of followers get dogmatic gurus, but that does not apply to this sutra. So this is a very unique teaching.

Sadguru comes to them only when the aspirant has a deep desire to realise Parama Purusa. Also embedded within this special sutra is the supreme idea that Brahma Himself is the Sadguru - not any human who is bound by maya.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Ananda Marga ideology says, "What is the Sadguru? The word “sat” means “that which undergoes no change”...“Sat”. Now, the entity by whose grace one comes into contact with sat (sat, the non-changeable entity, the non-changeable stance, the non-changeable nuclear entity around which so many electrons move) – that entity, or rather, that framework through which Parama Purus'a is working or Ta'raka Brahma is functioning, is the Sadguru." (2)

From the above guideline, it is quite clear that Sadguru is that singular Divine Entity, i.e. Parama Purusa Himself - no one else. Taraka Brahma is the Sadguru - not XYZ.

Hence there are two highly significant features to this sutra 3-8: (a) Sadguru comes when the aspirant has the strong longing to attain Him, and (b) Sadguru is Brahma Himself.

In His spiritual treatise, Ananda Sutram, the whole of Ananda Marga ideology is explained, including the appearance of Sadguru. And as we all know, Taraka Brahma is that Sadguru.

This sutra (3-8) is not difficult to understand for any sincere margii. Because their life as well as their coming onto the path of Ananda Marga and taking initiation & accepting Taraka Brahma as the Guru is verily the living representation of this sutra. Their account is this sutra in story form.

Conclusion

Baba’s teachings of Ananda Sutram are a story in sutra form. In particular, sutra (3-8) is the story of how all margiis came into Ananda Marga. By His grace, one develops the internal longing ultimately gets the Sadguru and the path of pure spirituality. The Sadguru guides and helps each sadhaka reach unto the spiritual Goal. If one does not have the requisite internal longing, they will not get the Sadguru.

~ In-depth study ~

Example of fake gurus not -- Sadguru

One Wt has written a "Commentary Book" (CB), yet instead of properly explaining Baba's divine teachings, the Wt moves in another direction.

Now see what this Didi’s "Commentary Book" (CB) does to this special sutra. In an attempt to explain Baba's sutra 3-8 about the arrival of Sadguru, the "Commentary Book" gives all kinds of examples and stories about so-called gurus like Swami Ramananda, Totapuri, and Ram Mohan Roy's guru. In each of these instances, the "CB" puts forth a "dramatic story" how these humans came to their disciples. This is the way the "CB" attempts to explain sutra 3-8 about the arrival of Sadguru.

In the Commentary Book, Didi writes:

"At the time Swami Rama[nanda] was the greatest teacher in Benares, but since Ramananda was a Hindu and Kabir was a Moslem, Ramananda would not take him as his disciple...[Kabir] fell at Ramananda's feet...and Ramananda had to take him as his disciple."

With regards to the above example from Didiji's book, Swami Ramananda is just a basic type of guru so no one can say that Kabir got the Sadguru.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Telling how one gets cow dung

In His spiritual treatise, Ananda Sutram, the whole of Ananda Marga ideology is explained, including the appearance of Sadguru. And as we all know, Taraka Brahma is that Sadguru.

Yet that "CB" explains sutra 3-8 by using tales about dogmatic Hindu gurus like Swami Ramananda as proof of how Sadguru comes before the sadhaka - as if such so-called gurus are Taraka Brahma, Mahasambhuti, and Mahakaola, i.e. the real Sadguru.

It is just like preaching about how one gets gold, but then in confusion you end up telling how one gets cow dung. Similarly, so many are getting common, ordinary teachers, but by her explanation of this sutra, Didiji is wrongly justifying that they got the Sadguru.

This sutra (3-8) is not difficult to understand for any sincere margii. Because their life as well as their coming onto the path of Ananda Marga and taking initiation and accepting Taraka Brahma as the Guru is verily the living representation of this sutra. Their account is this sutra in story form.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

The "CB" is making it look like getting the Sadguru is just like getting any ordinary teacher or joining any dogmatic path. But that is like comparing pure gold with mud or dung. The two cannot even be compared. In an attempt to explain sutra 3-8, the "CB" is equating Sadguru with various so-called gurus. This will only misinform and misguide readers.

Who wrote the book

As many may be aware, this so-called Commentary Book (CB) was written by Didi Ananda Mitra. The actual name of her "CB" book is, "The Spiritual Philosophy of Shrii Shrii Anandamurti: A Commentary on Ananda Sutram". The book has been printed twice: 1981 & 1998. Unfortunately, in that 17 year gap between the first and second printings, not a single mistake was repaired.

And now another 28 years have passed and still these same faulty teachings have not been repaired. Needless to say there has been ample opportunity to fix these errors.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Pramatta - bad from beginning to end

Even though this "Commentary Book" has been used in our WT Training Centres, and in so many other places for years and years, now more and more are now realising that this "Commentary Book" is not what it purports itself to be. Here Baba perfectly describes what happens when someone of lesser calibre attempts to explain His divine teachings.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "The scriptures should always be interpreted by qualified scholars, competent philosophers, and penetrating thinkers. If one tries to interpret a profound scripture with superficial knowledge, the interpreter appears ridiculous and the audience is confused."

"There are some people who are neither scholars, nor philosophers, nor penetrating thinkers, but merely wander about interpreting scriptures as a means of livelihood. They utterly fail to present the proper matter in the correct perspective before the audience...[and] do more harm than good to the society."

"[They] interpret the scriptures just to exhibit their intellect - to procure for themselves a certificate of erudition. They remain far from the living spirit of the scriptures." (3)

For their welfare

This letter has been written with everyone's welfare in mind. Those sincere seekers looking for a proper guideline about Ananda Sutram will gain the proper understanding of sutra 3-8, and related topics.

Price of poor leadership

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "The behaviour of the respected and elder persons in society is an example and ideal for others; it is followed and imitated by the succeeding generations as well. Today there is catastrophe and misery in human society and there is one reason: the defective leadership of society. People blindly follow even unintelligent leaders. The leaders hypnotize and attract thousands with their tall talks, gestures and other dramatics. Understand that the poverty and misery of any people in any country are the sins of the leaders. True leaders should always be vigilant and think how to work best for human society: they must be ever cautious that under their guidance the people are not led to darkness, death and immorality." A chance to serve the Supreme in the form of living beings

“All human beings are to be served with the same steadiness in all the three strata – physical, mental and spiritual – and you have to render the service by ascribing Náráyańahood to the served. Remember that your service does not oblige the Supreme, rather you are obliged because you have such a chance to serve the Supreme in the form of living beings.” (Ananda Vanii #28)

Q & A on mahaprayan + 4 more

Baba
Q & A on mahaprayan

Namaskar,

Question: We are observing mahaprayan each year and we have been told it has been approved by Baba. So the question is: Really, has mahaprayan been approved by Baba?

Answer: No, it is not true. MPD (i.e. so-called mahaprayan) has not been approved by Baba.

Here below Caryacarya gives an explicit period of time for mourning - i.e. 12 days. The annual mahaprayan dogma is in clear violation of this rule.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "The period of mourning should not extend beyond twelve days." (1)

Question: Why not?

Answer: Baba has given everything - all the dos and don'ts of life - in Caryacarya. He has addressed each and every matter from sunrise to the next sunrise, and from one's first breath to their last. Sadguru Baba has given His guideline for every occasion and circumstance. Nothing has been left out; no stone has been left unturned; no point has been forgotten.

When all-knowing Sadguru Baba has given a perfect ideology that is complete unto itself, and when He purposely did not include even one syllable about mahaprayan in His teachings, then we can be 100% sure that so-called MPD is not approved by Baba. He does not want us to observe MPD.

Question: But I heard there is one discourse where Baba mentioned this term, i.e. mahaprayan.

Answer: No, that is just the “smartness” of those in Tiljala Publications (TP). The said discourse - “The Coming of Táraka Brahma” - was given overseas in English. And Baba never spoke that mahaprayan word in that discourse. But then those publishers (TP) inserted the term “mahaprayan” in the Bangla and Hindi editions to befool those readers. It was all done in the name of translation. That is the height of their “smartness.”

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "The period of mourning should not extend beyond twelve days." (1)

More Q & A

Question: But how could Baba have spoken on this sensitive mahaprayan topic?

Answer: Here we must bear in mind the special manner of Guru. In His discourses, Baba always spoke about how this world is transitory and that life is short. He constantly discussed the nature of this ephemeral world with His bhaktas. This was a regular topic that was addressed again and again. So there is no question of Him considering this point of withdrawing His Mahasambhuti form as a sensitive topic. Rather He spoke openly on this - on numerous occasions in various ways.

Baba has directly told and given how to do Guru puja when He is no longer in His Mahasambhuti form, as He eternally remains as Taraka Brahma. He has also told how to do dhyana and other practices after He has withdrawn His form as Mahasambhuti and exists across time and space as Taraka Brahma.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

On so many aspects He has directly guided us about His withdrawing His Mahasambhuti form wherein He resides eternally as Taraka Brahma. But never did He mention anything regarding so-called mahaprayan. So there is no credence to the statement that Baba did not wish to discuss such sensitive matters. That has no bearing on the situation as Baba regularly discussed this. Remember, every festival that we Ananda Margiis should observe and celebrate has been clearly listed, outlined, and described in Caryacarya. Baba does not want us to observe mahaprayan and that is why it has not been given in Caryacarya.

Conclusion

Baba spoke in great detail about all aspects of life including how to make offerings to Him after the withdrawal of His Mahasambhuti form, whereby He remains as Taraka Brahma in His eternal stance. So if He wished for His bhaktas to annually celebrate "mahaprayan" then He would certainly have included this in Caryacarya. The fact that He specifically did not include it in Caryacarya etc demonstrates that He does not wish for such an event to be observed annually. Ananda Marga teachings are perfectly complete and cover every part of life. So when Sadguru Baba has not included the point of mahaprayan in His teachings then why should it be observed.

Why some do this

There are some who do not feel Baba's presence in their day to day life. And they are the ones who appreciate mahaprayan. My heart goes out to them because they could not realise Baba, even an iota. They do not feel His omnipresence - although such people lived physically around Him pre-1990. It is a sad state. These types of people think Baba is some type of social leader or mortal being. That is why they want to commemorate the annual death day or erect a memorial etc.

The person who feels Baba's presence all the 24hrs cannot even remotely in their dreams think that Baba is no more, let alone observe an annual death day. This is an issue completely based in bhakti.

So-called mahaprayan is deliberate slander

Those who are following so-called mahaprayan are doing sin because they are going against Guru's wishes. Such persons must face the consequences.

AM does not condone gay marriage

Namaskar,

Ananda Marga is based on bhagavad dharma. That is why it is said that Ananda Marga is a man-making mission. There are various animalistic activities promoted in the general society which are harmful for the all-around development of human beings that are not supported by AM ideology due to their bestial nature. Those things degrade the mind.

Here is one such example of animalistic relations: LGBTQ etc (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender). In the following teachings, Baba is clearly showing that Ananda Marga promotes marriages between males and females. With that principle, beastly marriages like LGBT etc have no place in Ananda Marga way of life. LGBT martial relations are detrimental for human society.

AM marriage: between boy & girl only - 1

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “In the manner prescribed for marriage in our Marga, both the boy and the girl have to take equal responsibility. Women and men are considered on the same footing, and there is no question of men considering themselves superior to women.” (1)

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “If the boy and the girl settle their marriage themselves, it is proper for the guardians to give their consent. In case the guardians feel that the consequences of such a marriage will be harmful, they may ask the boy and the girl to reconsider their decision.” (2)

AM marriage: between boy & girl only - 2

Ananda Marga Caryacarya guides us, “Male members of the Marga can marry females outside the Marga, but it will be better to marry a female member of the Marga to a male member of the Marga, as far as possible.” (3)

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, “The bride and the bridegroom, dressed in neat and appropriate clothing, will enter the marriage hall.” (4)

AM marriage: between boy & girl only - 3

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, “The guardians should not consider the caste or nationality of the bride and bridegroom, but they must consider the family and the merits and demerits of the two. The guardians, before fixing the marriage, will seek the opinions of the bride and the bridegroom and proceed accordingly.” (5)

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, “In the case of arranged marriages, the guardians should finally meet and ascertain the consent of the bride and bridegroom, and bless them, at least a day before the marriage is solemnized.” (6)

A few fundamental socio-political principles

Prout philosophy states, “For the all-round welfare and development of human beings, society needs to follow some fundamental socio-political principles. Without the firm foundation of such principles, disunity, injustice and exploitation will flourish. To avoid this and to safeguard the interests of all people, the leaders of society must ensure that cardinal socio-political principles are strictly followed. Otherwise, individual and collective progress can never be achieved.”
“There are three cardinal socio-political principles which should never be violated. First, people should not be retrenched from their occupations unless alternative employment has been arranged for them. Secondly, people should not be forcibly converted from one religion to another. Thirdly, no mother tongue should be suppressed. Occupation, spiritual practice and mother tongue are very important to human beings. If the sentiments associated with them are hurt, human beings will be deeply affected. So, you should never violate these cardinal socio-political principles.” (1)

Prout philosophy states, “If any group tries to violate any of these three cardinal socio-political principles, you should immediately oppose them with a thundering voice and sufficient force. Victory will be yours, because you are supporting the collective psychology. But before launching any movement, you should make sure that the masses are conscious of their exploitation, otherwise the movement will not be successful. Although it may take some time to raise the consciousness of the masses, ultimately you will be victorious.” (2)

POINTS TO PONDER - MAHAPRAYAN

Namaskar all,

At this time of the year the Tiljala campus is a frenzy of activity in preparation for the so-called "mahaprayan diivasa" programmes. The preparation superceeds that of preparation for Ananda Purnima.  Huge scale lobbying for margiis to attend this programme is going on. At the same time there is growing opposition to this programme.

The BIG dilemma:  "Should Margiis attended this programme which is increasingly being labelled as dogma?

Here are a few statements regarding  "Mahaprayan diivasa" . If you agree with the statement say YES and if you disagree say NO. If you are uncertain simply read Baba's books.

The mayaprayan  programme was NOT given by Baba in Carya-Carya.

YES  NO

By adding in the appendix (mahaprayan diivasa) to Caryacarya Part 1 implies that Baba's teaching is incomplete.

YES  NO

The directives given by Baba to His devotees is full of optimism. Mayaprayan (Death) programme is a pessimistic outlook.  It is a yearly reminder that Baba is dead and gone.

YES  NO

The Prabhat Samgeet “Tumi esechile kauke  na bale" was never commissioned by Baba to be the theme song for Mahaprayan.

YES  NO

Mayaprayan diivasa is NEVER observed for Lord Krisna. Krisna is very much alive in the hearts and minds devotees.

YES NO

Nowhere in Babas numerous books is it stated that a memorial be created for Baba. It is unPROUTistic (a waste of resources).

YES  NO

Prostrating and dancing around "Babas mahasamadhi" is tantamount to tomb worship because this spot resembles a Muslim tomb like the one in Ajmer. The focus is now shifted from Baba's photos and the Pratik to a tomb.

YES  NO

Baba has stated clearly that the mourning period should NOT extend beyond 12 days, yet this “sad” mahaprayan programmes has being going on for 22 years.

YES  NO

If the (mahaprayan diivasa) is not removed now from Cc, it will become official  and for the next 20 years, 100 years, 3500 years devotees must observe this day as a solemn (sad) day.

YES  NO

The Tiljala campus can never be a thirtha (place of Pilgrimage) because Baba did not approve of any “holy place” or thirtha

YES  NO

Food should not be be consumed at any shraddha as the food has been infused/prepared with an element of sadness. The "mahaprayan" directive states clearly that this occasion is  solemn as has to be observed as such.

YES  NO

This exercise will help you decide on the question of mahaprayan. Thanks for your time and effort.

In Him who is eternal

RE: ANNUAL SHRADDHA CEREMONY

Note: One margii raised the question - Is mahaprayan against Caryacarya? - and this is the reply given - Eds.

Namaskar,

In Caryacarya (I), in the chapter "Shraddha Ceremony", in paragraph of "A Few Directives", point 1: Baba says, "The period of mourning should not extend beyond twelve days." (CC part 1, p.65)

So this goes directly against Baba's teaching of Shraddha ceremony chapter of Caryacarya which is quoted above where Baba says only 12 days mourning.

In Hindu dogma, every year religious priests organise this type of Shraddhainjali for commemoration of deceased person. And there they do kiirtan, also they do (a) mass feeding, (b) katha kiirtan and (c) repetition of their rituals. etc So this Hindu dogma about Shraddha entered into AMPS and is sitting on high pedestal & well respected with new name-- "Mahaprayan".

In Carya'carya part 1, one appendix has been added after 1990 in the very last pages of the book regarding "Mahaparayan". It reads-- "The Revered Marga Gurudeva, in the holy name and form of Shrii Shrii Ánandamurtiji...solemn occasion...Mahaprayan Divas that is 21st October". This quote gives this idea that Shrii Shrii Ánandamurtiji is some mundane worldly figure who had one human form and left on 21st October, 1990.

Now please see following paragraph what Baba says about Himself (Caryacarya II page.1).

Baba says, "The one formless, beginningless and infinite Parama Brahma (Supreme Consciousness) is the only entity to be attained byliving beings-That alone is Jagat Guru (the Supreme preceptor), That alone has revealed Brahmavidya (intuitional science) to us through the medium of the name and form of Anandamurtijii."

With firm voice Baba Himself is telling that Shrii Shrii Ánandamurtiji is God Himself but some of our top-level Purodhas of AMPS wrote the complete opposite in Caryacarya Part 1 Appendix about Mahaprayan. This is the main contradiction about Mahaprayan observation.

At HIS FEET,
Devesh Kumar
