From fearful to fearless + 4 more

Baba
From fearful to fearless

Namaskar,

This letter addresses some key aspects of spiritual life and dhyana, and how we can cultivate a deeper, more intimate relation with Parama Purusa. In Sadguru Baba's teachings, it is given that sadhana is the journey from fearful love for Parama Purusa to fearless love for Parama Purusa. All should put their knowledge of this to proper use so they can move towards Him with ever-increasing speed, by His grace.

Examples of fearful & fearless love in spiritual life

Still today most of the religions preach about living in fear of God. In some extreme cases of fear-based relations with God, dogmatic followers think that, "God is ferocious and can curse and destroy me. I have done sin and He will leave me to burn in eternal hellfire." Some dogmatic religions adhere to this extreme tenet. In that case there is only fear or terror - no love.

Natural progression with sadhana

Those early humans were very primitive and viewed natural disasters - i.e. cyclones, hurricanes, or wildfires etc - as the wrath of God. They had a fearful relation with the Supreme. In particular, the Semitic religions (Judaism, Islam, & Christianity) maintained a fear-based, and very distant relation with God. Those followers could not communicate with God directly. They must go via a priest, mullah, rabbi, or some type of intermediary. In that case the relation with God is distant - there is no family feeling, rather fear only. People thought that, “If I do not follow the religious commandments then I will burn in eternal hellfire.” This was the terrifying feeling they had and it was injected from their very infancy so it was deep-seated. And still those religions are locked in that relation.

Love for mother

Case 1: Suppose a father punished his child and the child runs away and does not come back home. The child instead is hiding at the neighbour's house. The father is calling and calling for him to return home, but the child does not return. Rather, the child is quite despondent and unhappy. Whatever may be the reason, in this case the child's relationship with the father is based only on fear with hardly any love. It is just like one’s relationship with the police.

Case 2: Suppose a child breaks something in the house, and that child feels very badly and repents for their mistake. The child picks up the broken pieces and brings them all to his mother. In that case, we can say that the child has some fear but mostly love for his mother.

In the case of ideal parents, kids generally have some fear but mostly love for their mother.

Those prehistoric humans had only a fear-based relationship with God. That continued for thousands of years. It was only with the divine advent of Lord Krsna that a monumental shift occurred. Then bhaktas began having a loving relation with Parama Purusa. This is evidenced by the poetry and writings of Surdas, Miirabai, Caetanya Mahaprabhu, Vidyapti etc.

Some bhaktas think that, "If I do wrong then Parama Purusa will be unhappy with me." Actually they have yet to engage in any wrongdoing, but the very thought of that is enough for them to think that the Lord will be displeased with them. They have some fear, but mostly love for Parama Purusa.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Loving relation sprouts

As society developed, and aspirants broke free from the prevailing religious dogma, that fear receded and a loving relation sprouted. They started to relate with God as a Father etc. And verily, on the whole, the era is changing. Those who are a bit elevated spiritually feel that the Supreme Entity is close and within the periphery of their family. And steadily this feeling grows until one day the sadhaka becomes very close and intimate with Him. And ultimately the sadhaka reaches the destination and becomes one with Parama Purusa.

According to Ananda Marga philosophy, sadhana starts with fearful love and culminates in fearless love. For instance, in the initial stages, Ananda Marga sadhakas have some love, but more fear, for Parama Purusa. As they progress, the feeling arises that, “If I do not follow 16 points and the conduct rules then Parama Purusa will scold me etc.” In that case, the sadhaka does not want to displease Parama Purusa. They do not want to do anything that goes against His wishes. This type of idea comes in the mind. And when the sadhaka reaches the higher stages then more and more fearless love develops. The zenith state is 100% fearless love.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Conclusion

And this all unfolds very naturally and spontaneously in sadhana. A feeling arises in the mind - it is not imposed from without. If one sincerely does their sadhana then this stage comes - one will have attained the apex state of fearless love for Him. Then one is not afraid to go close to  Parama Purusa.

2nd grade bhaktas

Some sadhakas think they are unable to follow all the rules and codes of conduct and they will never be up to the mark. So they opt not to go close. Instead they prefer to do pranam from a distance. They have love for Parama Purusa, but do not want to go close and talk etc. They prefer to sit in the back for general darshan and DMC; and internally they vow to themselves never to go to any meeting or reporting, or dharma samiiksa, or PC etc. In that smaller venue, they may be pointed out, so they prefer not to attend, but they want to hear about it from others. There were some margiis and Wts who followed this pattern. They did not wish to go close but they had love for Baba so they came and stayed on the path of Ananda Marga.

Fearless love for Parama Purusa

(a) When bhaktas experience strong sadhana and potent mantra japa by His grace, then their fear automatically reduces. They think, "My Parama Purusa loves me and whatever mistakes I have made will not be cause for Him keeping me away, rather because He loves me He will take me on His lap, regardless of my past wrongs." Such a bhakta has mostly love along with a very small degree of fear for Parama Purusa. They request Parama Purusa, "Ok, I have committed many mistakes but it is Your duty to make me alright. It is up to You to cleanse me and give me strength." Such bhaktas have very little fear.

(b) If a sadhaka experiences deeper and more intimate relations with Him in dhyana, then naturally their fear will reduce and love for Him will grow.

In the last chapter of Subhasita Samgraha – 25 (H), "Iishvar Prem Tatha' Usake Sa'th Bhay", it states that it is appropriate and natural for sadhakas to begin their spiritual journey having a mix of fear and some love for Parama Purusa. By this way they will be careful to follow all the dos and don'ts. Then, slowly over time, or depending upon their approach in sadhana, they become more mature and focused and strictly abide by all those codes of conduct. Their inner link with Him deepens and their fear fades away as they attain that highest stance.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Ananda Marga ideology, "As long as human minds dwell on the duality that "I and my Lord are separate entities," they keep on moving around the periphery of Parama Puruśa. Instead of this, people should think, "Parama Puruśa is my Father – He may be great and wise, but after all I am His child." Now in the worldly sphere, if a father is learned and the son or daughter is illiterate, this does not at all undermine the sweet and loving relationship between the father and his child; rather instead of going away from Parama Puruśa, it is better to come close to Him so that the influence and wisdom of the Supreme can elevate His sons and daughters. And those who are wicked and sinful also need not be worried because they are also equally His children." (1)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “This sádhaná which is sádhaná for complete merger, for unification, starts with fearful love. Love must be there. Unless and until there is love, there can not be unification. So love must be there but it starts with fearful love and ends in fearless love: and the space between fearful love and fearless love is the space of Sádhaná. What is Sádhaná? Sadhaná is transformation of fearful love into fearless love. Do you follow?...”
“When the attraction is for the non-integral entity, for money, for family, for land, it is called Káma; when it is for the integral entity it is called Prema and the mental tendency during Káma i.e., the mental tendency during attraction for a non-integral entity is called Ásakti in Saḿskrta and the mental tendency during attraction for that Integral Entity is called Bhakti. Do you follow?”
“I said it starts with fearful love and ends in fearless love and the process of transformation of fearful love into fearless love is called Sádhaná (Intuitional Practice). Now it starts with fearful love…”
“Everybody starts his sádhaná with fearful love but that Sádhaná ends in fearless love because unless and until one becomes fearless one cannot become one with Him. One will try to keep oneself away from Him out of fear. So finally one will have to become fearless.” (2)

Can’t do highest lesson without pra'n'a'yama

Here is Baba's sadhana guideline for enhancing one's practice of dhyana.

In His discourse, ‘Chariot and the Charioteer', Baba explains about pra'na wherein He specifically guides us that pranayama and dhyana should be done in sequence – i.e. when the mind is very calm then one can do pranayama, and, directly thereafter, one should do dhyana. That's to say, pranayama should always be followed by dhyana.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Pranayama and dhyana are very important and closely linked as Baba has written the significant aspects of the practical process in His books. Here is one of the special and unique ways in which pranayama and dhyana are related. Here Baba guides us that pranayama is a necessary complement for proper dhya'na.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, "Pra'n'a'yama is the scientific process to control the respiration and hence the mind, as a result of which sadhana is especially facilitated. The practice of dhya'na becomes a time consuming affair if pra'n'a'yama is not adequately practised." (3)

By the above teaching it is clear that pranayama plays an important role in the practice of dhya'na. And through sustained effort in dhyana the sadhaka develops fearless love for Him and ultimately becomes one with Him, by His grace.

Baba's teaching on dhyana

In many places Baba guides us that dhya'na is our highest practice which has no comparison.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, "Dhyana is the unbroken flow of the mind-stuff, or citta, in one continuous stream, like the flow of oil, where all the propensities of the mind are fixed on the Goal." (4)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Dhya'na yoga which elevates human beings through constant self-analysis, obliterates the very existence of the non-spiritual, and expedites one's elevation into the supreme spiritual stance." (5)

By these sadhana teachings it is clear that dhya'na is that distinct practice which leads us unto Him.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Transforming fearful love to fearless love

In this passage Baba vividly tells us that sadhana – dhya'na – is the process of yojana't, whereby we move from the stage of fearful love to fearless love for Him.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Yojana means unicity with Him. The final goal of a sa'dhaka is to become one with Him...The spirit of sa'dhana' is to get oneself unified with the hub of this universal wheel, not united but unified."

"Now this sa'dhana' which is sa'dhana' for complete merger, for unification, starts with fearful love. Love must be there. Unless and until there is love, there cannot be unification. So love must be there but it starts with fearful love and ends in fearless love : and the space between fearful love and fearless love is the space of sa'dhana'. What is sa'dhana'? Sadhana' is transformation of fearful love into fearless love."

"When this attraction is for any non-integral entity, or for any small entity this is called ka'ma. When that attraction is for that integral entity, and the integral entity is only one and that one is Parama Purus'a — it is called Prema."

"Yojana't starts with fearful love and ends in fearless love and the process of transformation of fearful love into fearless love is called sa'dhana' (Intuitional Practice)."

"Sa'dhana' starts with fearful love:..One name of God is bhiis'an'a because everybody is afraid of Him. Everybody starts their sa'dhana' with fearful love but that sa'dhana' ends in fearless love – because unless and until one becomes fearless one cannot become one with Him." (6)

It is Baba's grace. For all bhaktas, the transition is from fearful love to fearless love for Parama Purusa.

Off the track

“Tomáre cineo cená dáy, cineo cená dáy tomáre…” (Prabhat Samgiita #1056)

Purport:

O' Parama Purusa, even after recognizing You, realising You is very difficult.

Just when I think that I have understood You, and feel that on the strength of my intellect I understand everything, You make me realise my foolishness by secretly giving a blow to my ego.

O' Divine One, whenever I think I have everything and that on the strength of my mundane wealth I have bought all that I needed, then by showing me the “priceless jewel”, supreme spiritual wealth, You make me understand my extreme poverty.

Baba, O' Parama Purusa You can only be realized by bhakti...

Note for Prabhat Samgiita #1056:

[1] Amu'ly Man'i: Literally means priceless jewels. The inner spirit and greater meaning is that supreme spiritual wealth which can't be purchased with worldly riches.

Prabhat Samgiita summary: In this above song, the overall teaching is that Parama Purusa cannot be understood with one’s intellect or by physically seeing Him; the human intellect and one’s physical organs have their inherent limitations. This is evidenced by some of the “great” Wts. They lived around Baba physically, and with their intellect they thought they understood Baba, but they remained very far spiritually. That is why, motivated by narrow sentiments, they split the organisation into pieces and created many dogmas and treated Parama Purusa Baba as a mere mortal. All in all, by their entire dealing, they have proven that physically seeing Baba is not enough to understand Parama Purusa.

In contrast, countless margiis and wts, even those sitting far away, could realise that Baba is Parama Purusa, by His grace.

In this song, another primary teaching is that material wealth also has its inherent limitation. One cannot fulfill all the longings nor all the desires by material gain. Money is not the be-all and end-all of life. With the strength of worldly wealth one cannot get Parama Purusa.

So people should be alert: With their little intellect (jinana marga) and worldly wealth they will not be able to get the summum bonum of life, i.e. Parama Purusa. In the spiritual sphere, one must do sadhana, surrender unto Him - and seek His grace. Only by this way can one truly satiate all their innate yearning and realise Him. Only then can their life become successful.

These types of people are most harmful

Ananda Marga ideology states, “The vanity expressed by the so-called civilized human beings of today is extremely dangerous. These people hide the cruder propensities of the mind under the cloak of sweet words and decent behaviour. They are more harmful to the well-being of the human race than the so-called uncivilized humans, because they are hypocrites. The defects of the uncivilized humans pale into insignificance before their abominable hypocrisy. The uncivilized humans of the past may have killed twelve people at most in the battles they fought with bows, arrows, sticks and spears, but the so-called civilized human beings of today kill millions of unarmed, innocent people indiscriminately with their dreadful and lethal weapons. Human society of today is being exploited by the so-called civilized people. Such people should not make themselves look ridiculous by claiming otherwise.” (1)

Rend asunder the mists of sinful deeds

“The despondent humanity, in the monumental task of searching for veracity, sees the beacon leading to the path of effulgence. This immense task makes humanity’s existence resplendent and illumines its path of movement with the blazing tenderness of humanism. You are the blessed travellers on that effulgent path. Let the unique blending of your profound wisdom and intense urge for action rend asunder the mists of sinful deeds and smash to dust the jagged rocks of hypocrisy, and establish you in the realm of supreme fulfilment. This is my wish for you...” (Ananda Vanii #71)

Relation between language and religion

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “The consent of those embraced must be sought for before renaming them in Saḿskrta. Language has got nothing to do with religion and as such, there is no reason for anybody depreciating the use of Saḿskrta. In this connection it may be added that the great emperor Aurangzeb used the term sudhárasa (juice of nectar) for mango (original Saḿskrta term for mango is ámra).” (1)

Why alluring non-margiis to campus

Namaskar,

We all know Baba places great importance on the study of history as it enables both individuals and communities to learn from past mistakes and thereby progress. Failing that, without the study of history, people commit the same old errors over and over again. Sadly, they remain shackled by the pitfalls of the past and are unable to advance. So the review of history holds a unique place for the development of any society.

This below letter was posted on this network nearly twenty years ago. This is the account of how Tiljala organisers lure and pay non-margii villagers to come to their dogmatic program in Kolkata 21 Oct - 26 Oct to falsely boost the attendance and other reasons of political somersaulting - all done in support of their mahaprayan program which itself is a direct contravention of Caryacarya.

Non-margii villagers are duped into going to Tiljala

Namaskar,

Year after year, it is quite evident that non-margiis are brought to the function held in Tiljala from 21st Oct to 26th Oct. Often they are drawn in by the free board & lodging for six days by the organisers to observe such a dogmatic function. All in all, there is a multi-layered strategy of deception going on here:

(a) First of all, the non-margii villagers are initially led to believe that they are going for a Prout rally, not so-called mahaprayan, where they will get free food and lodging and have lots of time to go sightseeing in Kolkata.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

(b) Second, those non-margii villagers are led to believe that for just 10 rupees (20 cents US) they got an actual train ticket as well as free lodging, free food, and all other expenses free. But that is not true - they only got a badge to attend the B group function - not a train ticket. So, in reality, they are traveling on that train illegally and could be put in jail. But they do not realise it.

(c) Those organising Dadas tell the train officials that these people are travelling to attend a political rally and should not be charged for their ticket. That is the unwritten rule in India.

(d) The railway personnel think that if they do not give free train travel to those non-margii villagers then they will be attacked, because these travellers are political activists.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "The period of mourning should not extend beyond twelve days." (1)

Ticketless train travel: MPD

(e) So all along those Dadas travel with tickets and those non-margii villagers think that they are all in the same boat. But they do not know that if the police intercede then they will go to jail for ticketless travel and those Dadas will be safe and secure - those Wt leaders will not go to jail because they have tickets. And verily this happens. On certain occasions, police and guards check the trains and those non-margii villagers are arrested for not having a train ticket and sentenced to six months jail. As those villagers and their families cannot afford to pay the bail - and since those Dadas will never come and rescue them - those few non-margii villagers have to pass the jail term where they are given the duty to clean and sweep all day long. A few of those non-margii villagers incur loan and pay bail, but the rest pass their time in jail and they get a big lesson. They lose all trust and faith in such Dadas.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

(f) Those Dadas collecting ten rupees keep that money and more importantly PRS Dada gets to brag and propagate in their email that so many people attended their MPD program.

(g) The margiis who attend the so-called MPD program think that all those villagers are bona fide margiis when in fact they are just simple non-margii villagers.

(h) Those simple non-margii villagers are pleased because they will pass their time touring Kolkata in exchange for participating in the program for 1 hour or so each day.

So that is the layered strategy of deception.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "The period of mourning should not extend beyond twelve days." (1)

Similar to annual death day ritual

Whether it is named as "so-called mahaprayan" or "shraddhainjali" or "samkalpa divas", the non-margiis will name it "annual shra’ddha (annual death ceremony)". And as we all know, the annual shra’ddha (annual death ceremony) tradition is a dogma as explained in Ananda Marga philosophy. On such annual shra’ddha (annual death) ceremonies, religious mourners feed people for free, and donate clothes or valuable articles to their guests and the public to please their ancestors.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Now let's suppose a margii is travelling by train, tram, or bus to Kolkata to attend so-called mahaprayan divas (MPD). If one co-passenger asks him about the purpose of his visit, he will reply that, "I will attend mahaprayan."

Immediately the co-passenger will state, "Oh, You are attending an annual shra’ddha (annual death ceremony) of your guru."

The margii traveller will explain, "On this particular day our Gurudeva left His physical body, so we call it so-called mahaprayan. On this grand occasion in Tiljala they arrange mass feeding, and distribute clothes and medicines."

Then that co-passenger will conclude by saying, "Indeed, you are going to attend a traditional annual shra’ddha (annual death ceremony)."

Here the point is that those outside the AMPS organisation will think of it as a typical shra’ddha or death anniversary. Because the so-called mahaprayan program organised each year in Tiljala is an exact replica of the dogmatic shra’ddha ceremony.

Yet we know how Sadguru Baba has condemned this dogmatic annual shra’ddha (annual death ceremony) throughout Ananda Marga philosophy. Plus in Caryacarya He has clearly mentioned that our dharmic Ananda Marga shra’ddha function should be observed within 12 days. That means there must not be an annual shra’ddha ceremony; annual shra’ddha (annual death ceremony) is never to be done for Sadguru because He is ever present. Whereas the dogmatic shra’ddha program is an annual ceremony where they "send" gifts and food to their deceased family member in heaven. In Ananda Marga, we wholly reject such a notion. Yet that is what non-margiis will think what is going on by having an annual "so-called mahaprayan" gathering.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "The period of mourning should not extend beyond twelve days." (1)

Snowballing: MPD

Every earthquake produces aftershocks, which occur in response to the initial quake. The same phenomenon is present in our AMPS related with so-called mahaprayan.

At its very core, the so-called mahaprayan function in Tiljala is an annual death-day ceremony. No one can claim that it is something different. Naturally then, seeing the example put forth by a few top Dadas in Tiljala, a few simple and naive margiis decide to do the same with their deceased ancestors. Some have begun honouring their grandfather and other family members or relatives each year on the anniversary of their death by hosting a feast, and distributing blankets, medicines, and clothing etc. This is the unfortunate yet growing trend. And the root cause is the annual death day ceremony observed each year in Tiljala.

Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji's aim is to wholly eliminate all kinds of dogmas including the annual shra’ddha (annual death ceremony), but now some Dadas are doing the exact opposite. Supporters of dogma are propagating and spreading this dogmatic ritual. That is the aftershock of the so-called mahaprayan program.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Certain dogmatic leaders do this dogmatic MPD commemoration because (1) leaders of dogma benefit economically, and (2) leaders of dogma get some followers. This we all know. For such reasons leaders of dogma are willing to propagate that Sadguru Baba is gone, and fool some naive and innocent margiis to participate in their dogmatic programme, as well as large numbers of non-margiis.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "The period of mourning should not extend beyond twelve days." (1)

How non-margiis are allured to attend

How are non-margiis allured to attend? Well, just like in the above account, leaders of dogma present it as a gift to travel and tour Kolkata. This is indeed a very unique opportunity for rural villagers. It is like one monumental event or a dream-come-true to move around Kolkata and have someone else pay for their trip. To do this, they only have to chant kiirtan a few minutes here and there. Those villagers think it is a great deal.

It is just like if you invite common people to take a free holiday to some exotic place on the other side of this earth, then people will jump at the opportunity. Similarly, for rural Indian villagers, going to Kolkata is something very exotic. They will talk about it their entire life. Plus, the time of so-called mahaprayan is when their agricultural work is less so they have free time to travel.

You can also think of it this way: If you want to do some sightseeing in Mecca, and Muslims offer to pay for your trip then you will feel obliged to attend their namaz program and participate in their feast. Side by  side, group leaders entice, cajole, and convince margiis (who have never been to MPD) to attend by using the allurement of kiirtan and visiting Sadguru Baba's room.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Finally, some margiis are verily confused and do not know right or wrong. So they just go to so-called mahaprayan because of their friendship with various Dadas or Didis.

All in all, this universe is colourful - if you organise any type of activity then some people will be ready to follow. So-called mahaprayan is like that. It is just like how various religious leaders have lots of followers. The followers naively adhere to the dogmatic edicts of those religious leaders. That is the way those religions work. Same is the history with the dogma of so-called mahaprayan. However, as more and more margiis understand that mahaprayan is anti-bhakti because it says that Sadguru Baba is gone, they will give up attending this dogmatic programme. And that is what we see happening nowadays.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "The period of mourning should not extend beyond twelve days." (1)

Ulterior motive

This so-called mahaparayan is what makes them who they are - it is their defining feature. Just as McDonald's is known for their hamburger, similarly B group is known for their so-called mahaprayan program. That gives them their identity. It is their flagship program and it is their aim to make it more and more lucrative each year.

Sadguru Baba resides in the heart of bhaktas

Sadguru Baba alone is the infinite, eternal Entity who is the Goal and He resides forever in the hearts of His bhaktas.

Those who observe the so-called mahaprayan programme should reconsider this dogmatic approach and come onto the path of bliss and realise His Divine and Eternal Self.

Note: Sadguru is ever-present so any use of the mahaprayan (death) term with Him is preposterous.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "The period of mourning should not extend beyond twelve days." (1)

A group of about 200 people from our village area led by samaj LFT Bhaskar Jena went to Kolkata by train in a rally in the name of Proutist Sarva Samaja Sammelan [All Indian Samaj Unions], and a badge was given to every one of them in lieu of rs.10 only, i.e. 17 cents. They were fed nicely and performed BNK kiirtana for a few hours on those days and the rest of the time was spent visiting different sites in and around Kolkata. They showed their gratitude to AMPS because of the free lodging and boarding provided by the so-called mahaprayan organisers.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "The one formless, beginningless and infinite Parama Brahma (Supreme Consciousness) is the only entity to be attained by living beings-- That alone is Jagat Guru (the Supreme preceptor), That alone has revealed Brahmavidya (intuitional science) to us through the medium of the name and form of Anandamurtijii. Unit beings must be made to appreciate Its majesty." (2)

True bhaktas know that in the true sense, there is no such thing as mahaprayan for Sadguru Baba. As the Sadguru He never dies so those who think He is dead are hypocrites. Why? When those acaryas give initiation to anyone they say, “I am just a medium; Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji is teaching you, and He is ever-present. So in one breath leaders of dogma say that Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji is guiding you, and in the next breath they say He is dead - mahaprayan. That is hypocritical and sinful.

Sinful deed

Any type of annual shra’ddha (death day ceremony) is prohibited in Ananda Marga. Per Caryacarya it is not allowed. Doing so is sinful.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “Shráddhánna: Shráddhánna (food offered at a memorial service) is neither priityanna nor ápadanna, hence it is not to be taken.” (3)

One time I went back to my village and I learnt that uncle, Harihara Dasha (a non-margii), had been to Tiljala to attend our Gurudeva's annual shra’ddha (annual death ceremony) function. I asked him how he could attend it. After all, my non-margii uncle was a simple, non-margii villager and I wanted to know how he had the means to go to Kolkata.

He replied, "What a grand gathering! 24 hours the people were taking delicious food! 24hours kiirtana was going on!"

Ananda Vanii states, “The entire humanity must be looked upon as one integrated existence – and move collectively towards the all-round perfection of human life. All actions are bound to confront obstacles. It has to be borne in mind that the nobler the task, the mightier the obstacle. For human emancipation, there is no other way but to march ahead crushing the towering peaks of obstacles with a benevolent intellect and collective endeavour. Hence I reiterate, go ahead with courage and unity. You have to move on ensuring real justice to all individuals and all geographical people.” (1)

Note 1: The above is one of Baba’s original Ananda Vaniis. These original and true Ananda Vaniis are unique, eternal guidelines that stand as complete discourses in and of themselves. They are unlike Fake Ananda Vaniis.

Annual Islamic mahaprayan + 3 more

Baba
Annual Islamic mahaprayan

Namaskar,

The below article by Muhammad Anisujjaman and accompanying photo depict the mahaprayan death day occasion of Muslim follower Khan Saroyar Murshid’.

Khan Saroyar Murshid’, a school teacher, died in Bengal and they observed the anniversary of the mahaprayan with many in attendance. Actually, such mahaprayan ceremonies have been popular in the Islamic tradition for hundreds and hundreds of years. They bury their dead and erect a tomb and regularly worship the tomb on the anniversary of the death. Some of the observances are large and some small - the common theme being they are regularly done. Muslims were doing that for mahaprayan.

Muslim tomb worship now in AMPS

AMPS has learned about the mahaprayan ritual from those Muslims. The proof is that you will not find old, old tombs in any tradition except Islam.

For this particular observance highlighted below, Muhammad Anisujjaman has written an obituary / eulogy in a Bengali newspaper for the mahaprayan of Khan Saroyar Murshid’, a follower of Islam. By this photo and accompanying article, it is clear they are keen to honour this death day program.

The below photo shows how mahaprayan is done by Muslims to observe the death of those mainly of the Islamic faith. Those followers bury their deceased and then perform yearly tomb worship on the anniversary of their death. Here you can see how they sit around the tomb of the deceased. This is one of the common ways they observed their mahaprayan ritual.

And here below we can see how in Tiljala they have implemented that same Islamic tradition by encircling the tomb as they perform their tomb worship during their annual mahaprayan program etc. See the below photo courtesy of Tiljala Publications.

Next, in the below piece, for the mahaprayan Khan Saroyar Murshid’, the word highlighted in orange is the Bengali spelling of mahaprayan.

Annual death ceremony: Sadguru treated as mortal

Naturally then, when the mahaprayan function is embraced by all as a death ceremony for human beings, then when it is done in Tiljala every year in October, all the locals think that a death ceremony is being convened---Baba is also a human being, not Sadguru.

Lowly disciples apply dogma to Guru

Taken altogether, the situation is quite pitiful. Beloved Baba is the eternal Parama Purusa, yet the mahaprayan organisers are treating Him like one mortal who died.

It is just like how Lord Buddha was against idol worship; he himself did meditation. But the moment Lord Buddha left his physical body, then his own disciples started making and worshipping his idol. The dogma which Lord Buddha opposed, his own followers implemented for him. How ironic.

And now inside a similar thing is unfolding in AMPS. Sadguru Baba is against the annual shraddha dogma:

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "The period of mourning should not extend beyond twelve days." (1)

Yet sinners have imposed an annual death day anniversary program - i.e. mahaprayan - in AMPS. And what to speak of 12 days, it is 35 years - and counting. How ironic - what Guru does not appreciate, they are doing that very thing.

Every Ananda Margii should pause & think

So I request you to pause and think. This letter is not about groupism; this is a spiritual issue on bhakti. Guru is being abused. Don't you think Guru is with you always? In the tantra of Ananda Marga, sadhana starts with this feeling that, "Guru is with me." One should have this basic feeling. Naturally every Ananda Margii thinks their Sadguru is with them. Then why are we allowing this dogmatic annual death ceremony, which is against Caryacarya.

In Him,
Jaideva
(Zakir Hussain)

Sadguru Baba is not mortal human being

In this article - as well as in its regular usage - mahaprayan is used to insinuate the death or death day anniversary  of a person who has made his departure from this world. It is not for God. That is why this mahaprayan program must not be used for Sadguru Baba because He did not depart - He is the eternal Parama Purusa. So the mahaprayan term is for humans, i.e. mortals.

It should be emphasized that the concept of mahaprayan means the death or death anniversary of a human. It is not something lofty, great, or divine, and is not meant to be used with Sadguru Baba. Some people, knowingly or unknowingly, want to ruin Baba's grandeur and soil the greatness of Parama Purusa. That is why they are projecting Baba as a mortal.

Hypocritical behaviour

Sadguru Baba is guiding you and in the next breath they say He is dead - mahaprayan. True bhaktas know that there is no such thing as mahaprayan for Sadguru Baba. As the Sadguru He never passes away, He is omnipresent. So those of our Wts who believe in and propagate that Sadguru is dead are confused. Actually they are displaying hypocritical behaviour.

When our Wts / acaryas give initiation, or revise anyone’s lessons, or give further lessons of sadhana, they say, “I am just a medium - Sadguru Taraka Brahma Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji is teaching you and He is ever-present."

In one breath our Wts (Dadas and Didis) say that Sadguru Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji is guiding you, and in the next breath they say He is dead - mahaprayan. That is both hypocritical and sinful. Hypocritical because they are telling one thing and doing something else. By mahayaprayan, certain acaryas are telling that Guru is no more, yet when teaching sadhana they are relying on Him. And it is sinful because it is abusive against Guru.
http://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com

It is similar to your own children playing before you and talking among themselves that, “My mother is dead.” As a mother, how will you feel? And not only that, they go one step further. Before your very eyes they start commemorating your annual death day ceremony. How do you feel about their ignorance?

True bhaktas never participate in the dogmatic annual death day ceremony / mahaprayan of the ever-present God. That is against pre-1990 Caryacarya.

Too much sleep ruins mind

Ananda Marga ideology states, "The first bad habit is nidra or sleep. Sleep is a state that creates a feeling of vacuity after it is over. That is, immediately after waking up people forget where they were or what they were doing before sleeping. They lose the sense of time. “What’s the time now?” they ask, forgetting whether it is day or night. If people sleep too much for days on end, this mental disorientation persists for a long time. “Is it day or night? What time is it?” they ask, confused. If this continues, their receptive and retentive powers decrease resulting in an almost total loss of mental power. They become dull, and lack courage to face life’s problems. They may have physical strength, but they lack courage. The ancient people believed that excessive sleep is good for health, but this is not the case. Rather, too much sleep not only impairs the health, but has an adverse effect on the mind." (1)

In materialistic societies, it is taught that 8 hours of sleep is essential. But that is not correct. If one sleeps deeply, then four hours of sleep is sufficient. One will awaken feeling revived and refreshed. In contrast, if one does not sleep deeply then the body will not be properly repaired nor restored. So the amount of time is not the operative factor. Rather, the depth of sleep is the key point. True sleep means a dreamless sleep - then both mind and body are quickly restored. In deep sleep, there is a complete vacuum, and one is not aware about the passage of time. In that state, only a few hours of sleep is needed.
