Golden rule + 3 more

Baba
Golden rule

This issue is complex so study carefully in order to understand. It is especially difficult for those who have sympathy for the beliefs of the Semitic religions. But for all those fully aware about neohumanism, this subject will not be difficult.

Namaskar,

Here we are comparing religious theology with Ananda Marga philosophy. Unless one keeps this basic idea in the mind, the matter will remain elusive.

"Golden rule"

"The Christian golden rule is based on the principle Jesus Christ taught in Matthew:7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.: "Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them," adding, "for this is the Law and the Prophets."

(A) In the Semitic religions, it is the rule that what you wish your neighbor should do for you, you should do for your neighbor. It is a business relationship. Suppose you are anticipating that your neighbor may steal from your house if you steal from his; in order to prevent this, you refrain from stealing from him. Or in another example, you want your neighbor to help you in your difficult time. And now he is in difficulty, so you are helping him with that motive.

(B) The neo-humanistic or sadhu mentality is that, “My neighbor is in trouble; my duty is to help him.” In that case, you do not calculate what he may or may not do for you in the future. But rather, you feel, “He is mine, he is my own brother and so I must help him - his suffering is my suffering.”

There is a vast difference between both “A” and “B” feelings. The “A” feeling is that of the Semitic religions and is found unfortunately in the below yellow quote from one AM book. The “B” feeling is that of neo-humanism, and is expressed in the below green quote from another AM book.
https://anandamarganewsbulletin.blogspot.com/

The proper definition of the term sádhu according to Baba is one who looks upon others as one's own, and has feelings of empathy and kindness for them. That person is a sádhu. But the below yellow quote says the exact opposite. The gist of the below quote is: If you want that your neighbor should not steal from your house, then you yourself should not steal from him. Everybody knows that this is the dogma approach of a particular religion. It has nothing to do with Ananda Marga teachings. Please see below the yellow quote, which expresses the defective idea: “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”

Remember, here we are comparing religious theology with Ananda Marga philosophy. Unless one keeps this basic idea in the mind, the matter will remain elusive.

Yellow is False, Green is Correct

Please pay attention to the following two quotes - one highlighted in yellow and one in green. These quotes are both from our Ananda Marga books, but, unfortunately, the yellow quote contradicts the green quote, and vice-versa.

QUOTE #1: The following is printed in Ananda Vacanamrtam-23, “Dharma Is Your Real Friend”:

“Sádhu really means “one who abides by dharma”. Lord Krśńa says [in effect]: ‘Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.' That is, whatever is required by me may also be required by others. This consideration for others is dharma, and one who acts like this is a sádhu.” (1)

That concludes the yellow quote; now see the green quote.

The proper definition of sadhu according to Baba is, one who looks upon others as one's own, and has feelings of sympathy and kindness for them. That person is a sádhu.

QUOTE #2: The following is printed in Discourses on Krsna and the Giita, “Why Does Supreme Consciousness Descend“:

“Every living being's own life is the dearest life to that being. Just as my own life is dear to me, so is the life of others dear to them. One who knows     the truth and looks at others as one's own, and has feelings of sympathy and kindness for them, is a sádhu.” (2)

That concludes the green quote. Now see the comparative analysis. Bear in mind we are comparing religious theology with Ananda Marga philosophy. Unless one keeps this basic idea in the mind, the matter will remain elusive.

Comparative analysis

[A] Bogus quote - highlighted above in yellow - paints an “I” centered worldview. The beholder of such a worldview performs good deeds only because he wants the same to be returned back. People with such a worldview are unable to think about the true welfare of others.

[B] Proper quote - highlighted above in green - projects the idea of neo-humanism. A neo-humanist considers all other beings as his cosmic sibling. The sentiment for cosmic brotherhood causes a neohumanist to have sympathy for all, be it other humans, animals, plants, or even inanimate objects. Such a sentiment is centered towards the “Cosmic I.”

Summary: The above yellow and green quotes from two different AM books contradict each other. The yellow quote states that one only need to perform good deeds with the motivation that they will get the same thing in return, and that such an approach qualifies one to be a sádhu. On the other hand, the green quote states that one performs good deeds because he feels a oneness and thereby a sense of empathy with others. Such a person will not think about what the next person is going to do for him; just he will simply serve those around with neo-humanistic sentiment. So unfortunately, the yellow quote contradicts the green quote, and vice-versa.

In the Semitic religions, it is the rule that what you wish your neighbor should do for you, you should do for your neighbor. It is a business relationship. Suppose you are anticipating that your neighbor may steal from your house if you steal from his; in order to prevent this you refrain from stealing from him. Or in another example, you want your neighbor to help you in your difficult time. And now he is in difficulty, so you are helping him with that motive.

The neo-humanistic or sadhu mentality is that, “My neighbor is in trouble; my duty is to help him.” In that case, you do not calculate what he may or may not do for you in the future. But rather, you feel, “He is mine, he is my own brother and so I must help him - his suffering is my suffering.”

Conclusion

There is a vast difference between “A” and “B” feelings. The “A” feeling is that of the Semitic religions and is found unfortunately in the above yellow quote from one AM book. The “B” feeling is that of neo-humanism, and is expressed in the above green quote from another AM book.

So, the yellow quote is wrong. It is not our Ananda Marga philosophy. It comes from the Semitic religions, and has nothing to do with Ananda Marga teachings. But, unfortunately, it has been placed in our Ananda Marga published discourse, and that is wrong. Every margii knows that Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji never speaks anything that is contradictory.

Bear in mind, our Ananda Marga books are sold openly in the public market; when non-margiis read this blunder they will not have great respect for Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji. That is the unfortunate outcome.

Two worst outcomes to ruin a book

Here are the two worst things anyone can do to any chapter or book:
#1: Spoil that chapter or book by making it self-contradictory;
#2: When due to sloppiness such a contradiction has been injected into the text, readers will think the writer does not know the subject matter.

These fatal flaws in our Ananda Marga literature are the direct result of the sloppiness and carelessness of Tiljala publications Dept. They are inexcusable. By these blunders, they have ruined the status of Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji.

Clarity on the topic

If you want to know the conclusive idea about the above discussion, then please read below.

The overall idea of the green quote is that of neo-humanism as propounded by Bábá. According to Neohumanism, a sádhu is the one who has an intimate relationship with everyone because he considers all as his brother and sister. This feeling comes naturally to a sádhu because, for a sádhu, Parama Purus’a is the Progenitor of the whole universe, and therefore all the members of the universe are His progeny. A sádhu performs good deeds because of his feeling of sympathy and kindness and not because he would like others to return the favour.

Harmful trend

Note: These days hatha yoga / fake yoga pranayama is becoming quite popular. Yet by this way the common people are getting harmed. Because the philosophy of mind is: As one thinks so they become. So if their practice of pranayama is devoid of spiritual ideation, the mind will be submerged in mundane thoughts. Because the mind has to think of something; it cannot remain completely idle. Also bear in mind that pranayama multiplies the effect of one’s thinking. So if one is involved in mundane or degrading thoughts during their pranayama practice, that will be very harmful. Then those lower propensities will become more dominant. And that will bring about one’s demise. Unfortunately, both Buddhist pranayama and fake yoga pranayama are mostly like that - i.e. devoid of spiritual ideation. So beware. As sadhakas of Ananda Marga, we should always keenly apply the proper ideation when doing this lesson and bring more onto the path so they can save themselves from the ill effects of bogus pranayama.

Ananda Marga philosophy states: “Question: What is práńáyáma?”

“Answer: Práńáyáma is defined as: Tasmin sati shvása prashvásayoh gativicchedah práńáyáma. That is, “Práńáyáma is the process of breath control along with the imposition of the ideation of Supreme Consciousness.” It helps the mind in concentration and meditation.

“Question: What is the spirit of práńáyáma?”

“Answer: Pránán yamayati eśah práńáyámah. That is, the word práńáyáma literally means “controlling the práńáh [vital energy]”. The psycho-philosophy behind the practice of práńáyáma is that the spiritual aspirant tries to let the práńendriya [ten vital-energy currents] remain in a state of pause so that the paused unit mind will merge into the ocean of consciousness.”

“Question: How many types of práńáyáma are there?”

“Answer: There are two main types of práńáyáma: hat́ha yaogika práńáyáma and Yudhiśt́hira práńáyáma. When práńáyáma is done without fixing the mind on a particular point of concentration, and without imbibing Cosmic ideation, it is called hat́ha yaogika práńáyáma. But when práńáyáma is performed with the mind fixed at a particular point along with Cosmic ideation, it is called Yudhiśt́hira práńáyáma. [The eldest Pandava, Yudhisthira, was the first person to popularize práńáyáma according to this method.]” (1)

Ananda Marga has spread across the planets

This is a brief English summary of the below Hindi teaching:

You should depend on the force of spirituality. That is what an intelligent person should do. And since the beginning that is what we have done. The “nucleus” [of Ananda Marga] is a small town and that nucleus remains the same, but the circumference is no longer limited to Jamalpur; it has spread not only across the entire globe but throughout various planets. And it is spreading more and more. Now remember that this Ananda Marga was made not by one or two but by thousands of righteous persons. From this DMC I [Baba] am bestowing Ananda Marga to the common people.

The above is a brief summary of the below Hindi teaching from "Spiritual Truth Surpasses Everything", V7-14 (E), MGD 3 January 1979 Patna. Here below is the Hindi “as-is” transcription:

Watch out: Writers are purchased by awards

Ananda Marga philosohy states, “Today the different countries of the world have allocated numerous awards for sáhityikas [writers]. But that is where the danger lies. Every government, whether monarchical, republican or autocratic, is run according to a particular ideology, and so there is little chance for the government to suddenly become impartial in bestowing awards on sáhityikas [writers]. Naturally it will judge the merits and demerits of the sáhityikas [writers] in accordance with the bias of its own party, and consequently sáhityikas [writers] will be compelled to sacrifice their ideals to feed their stomachs. These observations are generally applicable to different types of governments, but especially to democratic states, for in democratic states ideological clashes are more in evidence, and hence the need to propagate ideologies is also more acute. That is why democratic states want to use sáhityikas [writers] as propaganda tools. Needless to say, such made-to-order writings cannot be called literature at all – political propaganda can never be called literature.” (1)
